Chapter 19: The Airport

The text came in while Nathaniel was still pulling on his trousers.

It was from the manager of the Pendelton Group hangar at Burke Lakefront Airport.

Mrs. Pendelton's jet is fueled and filed for 9:10, the text said. Passengers: Mrs. Pendelton, one nurse, W. Pendelton, minor.

"Where's it going?" I asked.

"Doesn't say."

"Nathaniel."

"I know."

We were in the car in four minutes.

I had my boots on the wrong feet and my sweater inside out.

He drove the lake road at ninety with the phone on speaker, and the lawyer was already shouting at a judge's clerk.

"The school list is legal," the lawyer said. "She's an approved pickup."

"We can't say it's a kidnapping until she crosses a line."

"What line?"

"A state line, Nathaniel. Or a border."

"Then we stop her before the line."

"You can't stop her. She has the child in her custody until the court says otherwise."

"Then it's not custody," I said. "It's a woman with my daughter and a plane."

The hangar gate came up at 8:41.

Nathaniel slapped his keycard at the reader and the gate slid back.
