Chapter 21: Constance Alone

The press room at the Pendelton Foundation had forty chairs and a podium with a gold M on the front.

Every chair was taken, and the reporters stood three deep along the walls.

I sat in the second row with Dee.

Nathaniel stood by the back door with his arms crossed, because he had promised not to sit in the room.

At ten sharp the side door opened, and Constance came in.

She wore pearls and a navy suit, and her silver hair was perfect.

She had no assistant behind her, no lawyer and no nurse.

She walked to the podium alone, and the cameras clicked.

"Thank you all for coming," she said, in her soft, clear voice.

"I will make a brief statement, and then I will answer nothing."

She laid a card on the podium and did not look at it.

"My family has served this city for sixty years."

"We gave it a hospital wing, a library and forty scholarships."

"We were repaid by a young woman with a hospital bracelet who wished to take what was not hers."

"I did what any grandmother would do."

"I protected a child from a stranger."

A reporter in the front called out, "Mrs. Pendelton, Dr. Lyle has named you in a sworn statement."

"Dr. Lyle is ill."
