Chapter 10: Behind the Plant

Three hundred people stopped breathing.

Noelle laughed.

It was a soft, rueful laugh, the kind you'd give a friend who'd had too much to drink at a wedding.

"Tomas, sweetheart. Give me the microphone."

"No."

"You're upset. We all know you're upset."

"You called me at eleven thirty-one." His voice shook. "I looked at my phone for five months. You said she was alone and crying in the lobby, and I had to go to her."

"I did," Noelle said, calm and clear, to the whole room. "I'll say it plainly. I did call him."

A murmur ran through the tables.

"I was leaving a donor dinner and I saw her through the lobby doors. She was crying. I couldn't stop, I had a car waiting, so I called the one person who could." She pressed her hand to her chest. "I asked Tomas to look after his sister-in-law. That's all. That's the terrible thing I did."

It was so good that for one second I almost believed her.

Tomas stood there with his mouth open.

He looked like a man who had practiced a speech and found the script had been swapped.

"And the picture?" he said, weakly.

"What picture?"

"The one you sent Angelo."

"Oh, honey." Noelle's eyes went wet. "I forwarded what someone sent me. I thought he needed to know. I was scared he'd hear it from a stranger."

"Who sent it to you?" Angelo asked.

He hadn't raised his voice.

It carried to the back wall anyway.

Noelle turned to him with all her warmth.
