Chapter 43: The Sponsor

"She asked for you," Lourdes said, "so you will come with me. You will not sit with her alone."

It was Wednesday morning, the day after the window.

The glass had been swept up, and the owner had taped brown paper over the hole.

She had told me to sit on my stool and not touch a broom.

Lourdes had come through the back door in her black coat with her handbag on her arm.

"The lemon came from a boy," she said. "Angelo's man found him on the street camera. Fifteen, hood up, paid forty dollars to throw it by someone he never saw."

"And the note?"

"I know whose hand wrote it. I will ask her myself."

Dessa drove us south with the heater on, because I was cold and Lourdes would not admit she was.

Angelo had wanted to come.

I had said no, and he had said, "Say it back."

So I had said it back.

"I'm going with your mother, I'm going to sit down the whole time, and I'll text you at every gas station."

He had kissed my forehead and let me go.

The glass room was the same room.

The same telephones hung from the same metal cords, and the same guard watched from the same door.

When they brought Noelle in, she came through slowly, and she looked at Lourdes first.
