Chapter 14: Notice
Leland's papers reached my new office at two o'clock, carried in by a young man from Leland's floor.
It was a white binder as thick as my wrist, with a yellow flag on the last page.
The note on the flag was in Leland's handwriting: Just the usual. Sign where marked. Warmly, L.
I had my hand on the cover when Weston walked in without knocking.
He shut the door behind him and stood with his back against it.
"Put it down," he said.
"It's addressed to me."
"Delaney."
"I am the general counsel of this company. I was voted in six hours ago, by a board you tried to stop, and the first thing in my office is a binder you want me to leave unopened."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I can't say yet."
I laughed, and it was not a nice sound.
"You can't say. Is that the whole answer? Because I'm tired of that answer, Weston. I heard it in the Hamptons, and I heard it at the board, and now I get it in my own office."
"It's a few more days. I asked you for a week."
"For what? What are you certain of in a few days that you aren't certain of now?"
He didn't answer.
He looked at the carpet, then at the window, then at me, and I saw him decide to say nothing.
That was the part I could not stand.
"Two years ago I stood in a corridor," I said, "and heard you tell your uncle that counsel is furniture. You don't ask furniture what it wants."
"I know."
"Last spring you killed my promotion without a word. Today you stood up and said I shouldn't have the thing I earned. And now you want me to leave a binder shut because you have a reason you won't tell me."
