Chapter 16: The Lead Rope
I hung up the phone and turned around.
Amos was still leaning on the counter, and his arms were still crossed.
"She'll bring the whole river," he said.
"Let her."
"Karin," he said.
"I want you to tie me up."
His arms came uncrossed.
I said it again, because I'd practiced it in the cabin and I wanted to hear how it sounded in my father's kitchen.
"The soft lead rope in the tack room, the cotton one. I want my wrists tied. I want you to tell me what to do."
He looked at me for a long second.
His throat moved.
"Say why."
"Because for four months everyone has been deciding things for me," I said.
"I want to choose to give it to you. Just for tonight. Just to see what it's like."
He pushed off the counter.
"Go upstairs," he said quietly. "Take your clothes off. Wait on the bed."
My knees went weak.
"Yes, sir."
"Don't call me that," he said.
"Why not?"
"Because I'll like it too much."
I went up the stairs two at a time.
My room still had the iron bedstead I'd slept in since I was six.
I stood in the middle of the floor and took off my boots, my jeans, my flannel shirt and the rest.
I folded none of it.
I lay on the quilt with my braid over my shoulder and my heart going.
I heard his boots on the stairs, slow.
He came in with the rope coiled in his hand and shut the door behind him.
He stood at the end of the bed and looked at me.
"Hands up," he said.
I put them up.
He sat on the edge of the mattress and took my wrists in his scarred left hand.
He laid the soft cotton across them, a loop, then another, then one around the iron rail of the headboard.
