Chapter 12: Tina's POV

Tina's POV

We said the ninth Rosary ourselves, on our knees on the cold marble of the front room.

My mother's beads went from hand to hand.

Nobody else came.

Dom led it in his low exact voice, and Rafa and Quino answered.

I held the crucifix and heard my own voice in the Our Father.

When it was over I stood up, and so did they.

"Upstairs," I said. "His room."

The master bedroom was at the end of the hall.

Quino had stripped the bed that afternoon and put on clean white sheets, and a lamp burned on each side of the great dark headboard.

My father's reading glasses were gone from the nightstand.

I had put them in my pocket.

The four of us stood at the foot of the bed in the lamplight, and the room smelled of cedar and clean linen.

"This is the last night," I said. "And I want all three of you at once."

Rafa swallowed audibly.

Dom put his hand on the bedpost, and Quino was watching my mouth.

I took off my robe.

I took off their shirts myself, one by one, and they stood for it, very still.

I unbuckled Rafa's belt and Quino's and Dom's, and let their trousers fall, and nobody laughed.

The bed was enormous.

I climbed onto it, onto my knees in the middle, and held out my hands.

"Rafa. On your back."

He lay down with a grunt and a wince for his knee, and looked up at me with his black eyes shining.
