Chapter 23: Her Own List

Mark's mother lived in a narrow row house with a clipped hedge, and she met us on her porch in an apron.

Knox had promised to visit, and he kept the promise on a Sunday, with me beside him.

She sat us in her kitchen and put a plate of shortbread between us.

"I wanted you to hear it from me," she said. "Nicolette is gone."

"Gone where?" I said.

"Out of the state. Her sister drove up on Tuesday with a truck." She poured tea into three cups. "She sold the car, gave notice on the apartment and left no address."

She stirred her cup.

"The old man across the hall watched her carry boxes down the stairs and said nothing."

"Did she say anything to you?" Knox asked.

"She left a letter in my mailbox."

"What did it say?"

"I didn't read it." She set the teapot down. "I put it in the stove. I'll bury my son once, and I won't bury him twice."

Knox reached across the table and took her hand, and she held it hard.

"You were a good friend to him," she said.

"I wasn't good enough at the end."

"You worked on him for forty minutes in a parking lot. That is more than enough."

I looked at my shortbread, because I could not look at either of them.

When we got home, I put the tablet on the table.

I had not opened it in a week.

The note was waiting at the top of the screen, titled "Nicolette."
