Chapter 22: Ice
The ice took the power at six, and by nine we were naked on the loft floor in a nest of every blanket I owned.
Eleven candles burned on the sills and the sewing table, and the whole room moved with their light.
Outside, ice ticked on the glass and cracked the branches of the tree on Bishop Avenue, and the street was silent.
Levi knelt behind me with a bottle of olive oil warming between his palms.
"Face down," he said.
I lay on my stomach on the quilt and put my cheek on my folded arms.
He poured a little oil down the length of my spine, and it was warm and slow, and I sighed.
His hands settled at the small of my back and began to knead.
He worked the muscles at the base of my spine with his thumbs, and then slid up between my shoulder blades.
I felt the whole week of hunched pins and thread go out of me.
"You're good at this," I said.
"I've been practicing on a two-by-four."
I laughed into my arms.
His hands slid lower, over the swell of my ass, and squeezed, slick and heavy.
I lifted my hips a little into his palms.
"Patient," he said, at my ear.
"I am being patient."
"You are not."
He moved down to the backs of my thighs and worked the oil into them with his thumbs, up and then down.
With each upward stroke his knuckles brushed the damp heat between my legs and slid away.
I whimpered.
He did it again.
"Levi."
"Mm," he said.
"Touch me."
"I am touching you," he said.
"You know what I mean."
He kissed the back of my knee, and I heard him smile.
Then his oiled thumb slid between my legs and parted me, and found me, and went in a little way, and out.
I pushed back against it.
"Please," I said.
"Roll over."
I rolled onto my back, and the candlelight flickered over him.
It lit the long lines of his chest, the flat of his stomach, the dark gold hair below it.
