Chapter 17: Board
The Linden Homes boardroom had a glass wall, and by nine o'clock on Thursday every employee in the building was standing behind it.
Nobody pretended to be working.
The sales staff, the estimators and the front desk crowded the hallway with their coffee cups.
They watched Mitchell take his seat at the head of the long walnut table.
He had shaved, and his tie was perfect.
He looked like a man arriving for a normal meeting, and I had never admired his nerve less.
The three old partners sat down on my side.
The oldest, who had held my hand at my father's funeral, did not look at Mitchell once.
"We have one item," he said, and cleared his throat.
"Felicity has asked for a vote on the office of president."
"On what ground?" Mitchell asked, smiling around the table.
