Chapter 19: Wall of Women
The gallery on Wall Street was fuller on its last night than it had been on its first.
Word had traveled, and word had made the room hungry.
Two hundred people held small glasses under the high ceilings, and three television cameras waited near the front door.
Rafe stood at the center of it in a black jacket and a black turtleneck.
One hand held a collector's elbow and the other held a glass.
He looked tired, and he looked magnificent.
He was telling the story of an artist hunted by a bitter wife and a jealous husband, and he told it well.
"She was a muse once," he was saying. "It's tragic what the town does to a woman."
Then Maribeth pulled open both glass doors at once.
We came in side by side, twelve of us in a line.
The woman in the gray coat carried a flat black portfolio under one arm.
The thin woman with silver hair carried another, and the woman from Portland carried two.
Each portfolio held the prints from the wall in the back room.
