Chapter 23: Linden
My father's office had the same walnut desk and the same view of the parking lot, and on Monday morning it smelled like lilies.
Maribeth had beaten me to it.
She stood behind the desk with her sleeves pushed up, jamming a fistful of white blooms into a steel bucket.
"It's a bucket of lilies," she said. "You told me you'd need one."
"I told you I'd hit him with one."
"It's a deterrent now," she said. "Keep it by the door."
I laughed so hard I had to sit down in my father's chair.
The nameplate on the desk still said W. REDDICK, PRESIDENT.
I picked it up and put it in the bucket, under the lilies, and Maribeth cheered.
At nine o'clock the door opened without a knock, and Ansel came in with a toolbox and a yellow hard hat.
"I'm here for the ceiling," he said.
"Which ceiling?"
