Chapter 18: Barn Raising
I called him back at 11:53.
He answered in a whisper.
"Are you still in his office?" I said.
"I'm in my room. I put everything back exactly how it was."
"Coby."
"He's at her place. He thinks I don't know the code to anything."
"If he catches you..."
"Then he catches me. What's he going to do, send me to Connecticut?"
I put my hand over my eyes and laughed.
"Don't do it again," I said. "I mean it. You did enough."
"Did it help?"
"It helped."
I heard him breathe out on the other end, long and shaky.
On Monday morning I drove the photos to my lawyer in Holland.
On Monday afternoon she filed Coby's petition to stay in Michigan.
He'd asked for it himself, and he'd named me as the person he wanted to live with.
On Thursday a man from the marina next door walked over with his coffee.
He looked at the black square where the steam shed used to be.
"When are you raising it?" he asked.
"When we can afford lumber," my father said.
He nodded and walked back.
On Friday evening, eleven pickup trucks came through our gate.
