Chapter 18: Site Nine
The new gymnasium stood at the far end of the post, lit up in the snow.
It was not finished.
Scaffolding hung on its north wall, and the front doors were still plywood and temporary glass.
Trina crouched with me behind a stack of pallets and held the ATV key in her fist.
"I'll be in the sound booth before dawn," she said. "I'll sleep under the mixer."
"Go."
"Mara."
"I know."
She wanted to hug me and could not, so she just pressed the key into my gloved palm and ran.
I watched her go, small and fast, and then I took off both gloves and stuffed them into my coat.
I walked up to the front doors with my bare hands swinging at my sides.
Two Institute guards stood under the portico in black parkas.
They saw my hands, and their faces went the color of the snow.
I did not have to say anything.
One of them stepped back and keyed a code into a panel.
