Chapter 14: The Pier at Nine
The restaurant at the end of the pier was full by nine.
I came in through the kitchen door with Tullio at my back, and Raimondo's men were already at every exit.
Raimondo sat at a corner table with an old man in a camel coat.
The old man was the boss of the Gravesend crew, and Raimondo had asked him to dinner that afternoon.
He did not know why yet.
His captain sat two tables over with four of his own men, eating clams.
I knew him from his voice.
He was fifty, heavy, with a gold watch and a laugh that carried across the room.
I walked up to his table and pulled out the empty chair.
"Sit somewhere else," he said, without looking up.
"I'm Nerina Brancato," I said.
The laugh stopped.
"I don't know any Brancatos."
"You will in a minute." I laid my phone on the tablecloth and pressed play.
His own voice filled the corner of the room.
Come to the marina tonight, nine o'clock. Bring next week's shipment list or don't bother.
Nobody at the table moved.
Two tables over, the old man in the camel coat put down his fork.
"Who was that?" he asked.
"That's a recording of your captain," I said, loud enough to carry. "Talking to a woman who has sold him Brancato shipment schedules for a year."
The captain's face went red to the collar.
"This is a setup. She's a struck woman. She's nobody."
"I'm nobody," I agreed. "That's why I can say it here, in front of your boss, with no family behind me."
I turned my head toward the old man.
"Sir, you have a treaty with Raimondo Corvi. Your captain has been selling Corvi shipments too. He couldn't sell the Brancato ones without a buyer's route, and your docks are the only route there is."
