Chapter 16: Line Six

The Lake Shore townhouse had one lamp on in the front room.

Cora let herself in with her own key at ten sharp.

The judge had ruled that the house was hers to occupy, and she meant to use the right.

Alexander was parked three doors down, with the engine off.

She had asked him to wait, and he had agreed with his jaw set.

"Cora," Delaney said from the sofa. "Thank you for coming."

She wore a cream suit and no makeup, and her eyes were red.

A man sat in the armchair beside her with a camera on his knee.

Its red light was on.

"Who is he?" Cora said.

"A friend." Delaney smiled with trembling lips. "He's a photographer. I wanted a witness, after everything."

"You wanted a record."

"I wanted to say sorry, and I wanted somebody to see me do it."

Cora closed the door behind her and stayed on her feet.

Marguerite sat on the third stair, with her hands in her lap.

She looked ten years older than she had at noon.

"You said you typed the page," Cora said.

"I did." Delaney stood and took a step toward her. "Brooks made me. He said it was just a paragraph, and that the judge would never look. I've been sick about it for weeks."

"Then tell me what it said."

"I don't remember the wording."

"I do."

Delaney's smile held.

"Of course you do."

She came closer, and closer, until she was a foot away.

Cora understood then what the trap was.

Delaney was standing exactly where a woman stands when she wants to be hit.

"You ruined me," Delaney said, in a low, shaking voice made for a microphone. "You took everything. Go on. You want to, don't you? Go on."
