Chapter 21: To an Empty Room
At one o'clock the Farwell Capital atrium was almost empty.
A podium stood in the middle of the marble floor, with a microphone Brooks had paid a technician to set up.
Forty folding chairs faced it, in neat rows.
Nobody sat in them.
A cleaner pushed a cart along the far wall, and a security guard stood by the elevators with his arms folded.
Cora came in through the side door alone and stopped in the shadow of a pillar.
Alexander was waiting in the car outside.
She had asked him to be, and he had asked only once if she was sure.
Brooks stood at the podium with a sheet of paper.
He had sent the invitations himself on Thursday night.
He had emailed every employee, every board member, every reporter who had called him in the last week.
The staff had been told by the new chairman that they could take a long lunch.
The reporters had gone to the courthouse steps, where Cora had given a short statement at noon.
Brooks looked at the chairs.
He looked at the clock over the elevators, and at the paper in his hand.
Then he leaned toward the microphone.
"My name is Brooks Farwell," he said, and the room gave it back to him, thin and hollow. "I'm going to read an apology to my wife. My former wife. Her name is Cora Lenhart."
The cleaner stopped her cart.
"I never paid her one dollar," Brooks said. "I never thanked her. I introduced her as the help to a ballroom full of people."
His voice caught, and he pushed through it.
