Chapter 7: Kristen's Price

The revolving door spun my mother out onto the sidewalk.

The lobby slowly started moving again.

I stood there with my heart going hard.

My phone buzzed before I reached the elevator.

Kristen.

"Coffee? Just us. The place across the street. I'm already here."

She was sitting in the window of the café in a cream sweater, with two lattes on the table.

She'd ordered mine the way I liked it.

She'd known that about me her whole life.

"Sit," she said. "Relax. I haven't told him."

I sat.

"Why not?"

"Because I'm not stupid." She stirred her latte. "If Trevor finds out, he wants you back. And then I lose my wedding. So I'm keeping quiet."

"For free?"

She smiled.

"Five million."

"Kristen."

"It's nothing to you. It's a rounding error. I looked it up."

She leaned in.

"Five million, wired before the fourteenth. I marry Trevor, I never say a word, and you never see his face again."

"And if I say no?"

"Then I tell him tonight. And he lawyers up, and he drags you through court, and you spend a year in depositions explaining why you hid four billion dollars during your divorce."

She tilted her head.

"Four point seven. Forbes says."

I picked up my latte.

I took one sip.

Then I set it down.

"Tell him," I said.

Her spoon stopped.

"What?"

"Tell him. Tonight. Go ahead."

"You're bluffing."

I stood up and put a ten-dollar bill on the table for my coffee.

"I've never bluffed in my life, Kristen. You'd know that if you ever paid attention to me."
