Chapter 8: On His Knees

Sebastian came and stood next to me at the glass.

"Do you want him removed?"

"No," I said. "I want to hear what he says."

"Then I'm coming down."

"You can watch from the doors. Don't come out unless I wave."

The plaza was full of people on their lunch break.

Office workers on the benches. A hot dog cart. Tourists taking pictures of the fountain.

And my ex-husband, on one knee on the wet stone, with two dozen roses.

People were already filming him.

He stood up as soon as he saw me.

His eyes were red.

He'd been crying, or he'd rubbed them to look like it.

"Rebecca. Oh, thank God."

He came toward me with the roses held out.

I didn't take them.

He kept holding them anyway.

"I'm so sorry," he said. "I'm so, so sorry. I don't know what happened to me."

He swallowed hard.

"It was Kristen. She came after me for a year, Rebecca. She wouldn't stop."

"She was in our bed."

"I know. I know. I was weak. I was stupid." He shook his head hard. "But it's you. It was always you. Ten years. You don't throw away ten years."

"You did. In eighteen hours."

He pulled something out of his jacket.

A small velvet box.

He opened it.

It was a pair of diamond earrings.

"I bought these for our anniversary," he said. "Before. I was going to give them to you that night."

I looked at the tag still hanging off the box.

The date on the receipt sticker was yesterday.

"Kristen told you last night," I said. "And you bought these this morning."

His face twitched.

"That doesn't matter. What matters is we fix this. Come home. I'll leave her today. I'll call off the wedding. We'll start over. Anywhere you want. Here, even."

"Here," I said. "In New York."

"We could be good here. You and me." He tried to smile. "With everything you've got now, we could be a team."
