Chapter 22: The Lab Is Ours

The brass plate said THE STANDISH LAB, and under it, in smaller letters, E. STANDISH, INVENTOR OF HALCYON.

Eliot read it twice, and put his palm flat on the metal.

It was cool, and it was real.

"Four months ago I had a box," he said.

"You still have the box."

"I have the box and a door." He turned. "That's the whole difference."

August said nothing.

He stood in the corridor with his hands in his pockets and his eyes red.

The entire thirty-first floor pretended not to be watching.

Eliot took his sleeve and pulled him into the lab and shut the glass behind them.

He did not say thank you, and he did not have to.

At nine that night the building was empty.

The cleaners had gone, and the benches lay in rows under the emergency lights, with the Hudson black and glittering beyond the glass.

Eliot sat on the steel bench in his white coat with his legs swinging.

He had been sitting there for twenty minutes, doing nothing at all, and the doing nothing was deliberate.

The door opened.

August came in with two coffees and stopped.

"You're supposed to be home."

"I was thinking about this room."

"It's a very nice room."

"It's mine." Eliot slid off the bench. "Put the coffee down."

August set the cups on the nearest counter.

He had taken off his jacket in the elevator.

His sleeves were rolled to the elbow, and in the pale light his forearms looked enormous.
