Chapter 23: Nest
The tub in the new house was deep enough to float a boat.
Eliot lay back against his husband's chest in water as warm as blood.
It was the last Saturday of May, and there were no lights on in the bathroom except a single candle on the sill.
Outside the window, the garden of the narrow brick house on West 20th Street had gone green overnight.
Eliot's belly rose out of the water, round and tight and shining.
He was seven months along.
August's hands were on it.
They moved in slow wet circles, up and around and down, soaping the skin with a bar of lemon soap.
Every time the baby shifted under his palm, his breath caught.
"She's awake," he said.
"She's always awake at night."
"She likes the bath."
"She likes your voice," Eliot said. "She does a somersault every time you open your mouth."
"I'll stay quiet."
"Don't you dare."
August laughed, and the vibration went through Eliot's back.
He sighed and turned his head to rest it in the hollow of the big shoulder.
The beard scratched his temple.
He loved it.
The bite on his neck lay just under August's lips.
August kissed it, slow and open, and a long slow warmth rolled down Eliot's spine and settled low.
"Mm."
"Does that feel good?"
"You know it does."
"Tell me anyway."
"It feels like I'm the only thing you've ever wanted."
"You are."
August's hand slid lower.
It left the swell of the belly and drifted through the water, over his hip, down his inner thigh.
It curved around his cock, half hard already, and held it.
Eliot's head fell back.
"I'm enormous," he said. "I can't see my own knees."
"You're the most beautiful thing in the world."
