Chapter 19: Twenty-Three Days

Georgina's POV

On the third day, Eleanor stood outside the bookbinder's with her handbag held in both hands.

I had said she could come.

I had not said I would be kind.

"I have no right to come up," she said.

"No."

"I only want to say it where you can see me."

I stood in the doorway with June on my right hip.

Eleanor looked at her granddaughter and did not reach for her.

"I have told my sister and the church committee," she said. "I told them you were never unwell, and that I was the one who said it."

"What did they say?"

"My sister cried. The committee chairwoman asked me to step down from the flower fund."

"Good."

"I don't ask you to like me. I would like to be let to see her on Sundays, if you'll allow it, and you may be in the room."

I thought about it.

I thought about the woman who had held my daughter and wept at the courthouse.

"Sunday afternoons," I said. "At Bea's. Bea decides if you stay."

Eleanor nodded and wiped her cheek with a gloved knuckle.

"Bea decides," she repeated, and it was the first time I'd ever seen her accept a rule.

After that, I kept the days.

I had told Winslow to stay away and he did.

He came to the park on Saturdays with June's sunhat and her yellow blanket, and he stayed on the far bench, and he never once walked across the grass.

He asked Bea what time the visits ended.

He did not ask me.

On the twentieth day he left a bag of clean bottles on the landing, and a note: Sorry. Didn't mean to leave anything. Only meant to help. Take them or leave them.

I took them.

On the twenty-third day my first picture book came back from the printer.

It was a story about a lighthouse cat, and the bookbinder downstairs had offered to hold a small evening for it in his shop.

I sat on the landing with a book in my lap and my phone in my hand, and I typed.

Me: Tonight. Downstairs. Six.

Three dots appeared, and went, and came back.
