Chapter 6: The Ride Home

Rory caught up with me at the end of Lance's driveway.

"Anneliese, wait."

"You knew," I said.

"Anneliese."

"You knew about them. I saw your face."

He took off his cap and put it back on, which I was learning was what he did when he had no joke.

"I saw them together in July," he said. "At a gas station, two towns over. I didn't know what I was looking at. I swear, I didn't know she was your roommate."

"And in September?"

"Let me tell you the whole thing tomorrow. Not here. Please."

Behind him, three baseball players had come out onto the porch and were shouting his name.

I looked at his face, and it was open and miserable, and I knew that if I pushed I would get a real answer.

I found that I did not want one tonight.

I had already been told too many true things in front of too many people.

"Tomorrow," I said. "Go back inside. You're the best decoy anyone ever had, so go be loud somewhere."

"I'm not letting you walk home alone."

"I'll drive her," said Dane.

He was standing at the edge of the driveway with his keys in his hand.

I hadn't heard him come out.

Rory looked at him, and then at me, and then at the porch.

"Fine," he said. "Dane, text me when she's in her room. Anneliese, I'm sorry, and I mean it."

He ran back to the porch, and I followed Dane to a black pickup parked under a streetlight.

He opened the passenger door for me and waited until I had my seatbelt on.

Then he shut it, gently, and walked around to his own side.
