Chapter 27: Sundays

On the first of October the gallery was full before nine.

The Ruggeri side filled the right.

Four aunts in a row, the one in purple at the end with her brooch. The capo with the cigar, in a tie.

The Gatti side filled the left.

The nephew from the bakery counter. Cousins I'd never seen. Women who'd known Tito's mother all her life.

Paola sat directly behind me.

Tito was at school, with a new pickup list that had exactly three names on it.

Valerio's Boston lawyer sat at our table with her files squared.

I sat beside Valerio, not as counsel. As his wife.

The door at the side of the courtroom opened.

Two officers brought Whitman in.

He wore an orange jumpsuit and white canvas shoes. His sandy hair needed cutting. His thumb still had a bandage on it.

He'd been held without bail since August.

He was still, on paper, Fiorella's co-counsel. His motion to void my marriage was still on the docket.

He'd asked to argue it himself.

He sat down at Fiorella's table, beside her heavy lawyer, and the heavy lawyer moved his chair six inches away.
