Chapter 26: The Sink

"Tonight I am," I said.

Tito took my hand and held on to it all the way back to the car.

He wouldn't let go of it in the car either.

At the house he ate half a bowl of pasta and fell asleep at the long table with his fork still in his fist.

Valerio carried him up.

I did the story anyway, to a sleeping boy, because it was the rule.

When I came back from brushing my teeth, Valerio was lying on the floor beside Tito's bed.

No pillow. His jacket folded under his head. His shoes still on.

"There's a bed in this house with your name on it," I said quietly.

"He might wake up."

"He might."

"Then I'll be here when he does."

I sat down in the armchair by the window, with the suit on the chair beside me.

I didn't go to my room.

Neither of us said anything for a long time.

"You were in front of the gun," he said finally, to the ceiling.

"I was."

"Don't ever do that again."

"Then don't ever point one in a room with our son in it."

The word came out on its own.
