Chapter 25: In Cuffs

Whitman put both hands up.

The one Tito had bitten was dripping on the white rug.

"Valerio," he said. "Valerio, let's talk about this like..."

"Don't say my name."

Valerio didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

He walked into the living room slowly, the gun steady, his eyes on nothing but Whitman.

The cartoon dogs kept barking on the television.

Behind my knees, Tito had gone completely still.

I reached back without looking and found his face with my hand.

"Partner," I said. "Close your eyes. Count frogs for me. Out loud."

"One frog," Tito whispered. "Two frogs."

I stepped sideways.

One step, into the middle of the rug.

The gun was pointed at my chest now, past my shoulder, at the man behind me.

Valerio stopped.

"Move, Josephine."

"No."

"You said that to me once before. In my own front hall."

"And I was right."

"Five frogs," Tito said, against the back of my legs. "Six frogs."

Valerio's jaw worked.

His eyes went from Whitman to me, and stayed.

"He took my son," he said. "He put him in a car and tried to sell him."
