Eight Months Pregnant, My Husband Locked Me in a Freezing Cabin for His Ex on Christmas Eve novel · Chapter 12 of 24

Chapter 12: Neil Alone

Neil sat on the lobby bench with his elbows on his knees.

The poinsettia from yesterday was still on the gift desk, and the woman behind the desk had turned her chair so her back was to him.

I stopped ten feet away.

Rhonda stood on my left, and Eli stayed by the elevator, where he could see the whole room.

"Where's Joyce?" I said.

"She went home. I told her I was getting the car."

"You came back to see June."

"I came back to see you."

"You don't get either."

He looked up.

His eyes were red, and he hadn't shaved. There was a coffee stain down the front of his shirt.

"I took your phone," he said. "I want to give it back."

He reached into his coat and set it on the bench, face up, between us.

Dead, with a cracked corner.

"It's been in my mother's desk drawer since Christmas Eve."

"You said you'd charge it in the car."

"I know what I said."

I walked over and picked it up.

"Neil, you can see June when you tell me everything. All of it, with Rhonda listening and her phone recording."

"Okay."

"And then I decide if you see her, and for how long."

He nodded.

Rhonda took out her phone and pressed the red button.

"Say it," I said. "From the beginning."

He rubbed his hands over his face.

"Mom brought it up in October," he said. "She said Whitney had been through so much. She said Whitney could never have a family and you were so lucky. She said it'd be a kindness if Whitney could help with the baby."

"Help."

"That's what she said. I thought she meant a nanny. Then she said you'd had a hard pregnancy and you might need to rest afterward. She said she knew a doctor who'd help you with that."
