Chapter 21: The Road to the Gate
We left the temple before dawn.
The red clock read 3, and the north was lit by a pale seam of fire where the Gate stood open.
Emmett walked beside me on his own feet.
The poison line under his skin had faded to a thin grey thread, but I could feel it in the link, a cold stone he carried.
Tavi limped behind us with her stick and her bronze key.
We had gone a mile when a horse came galloping up the road behind us.
I turned with my sword out.
It was the captain of the guard, the one who had arrested Rennard, without his helmet.
He reined in and swung down from the saddle.
"Sunblade," he said, out of breath. "Nightwarden. The Queen Regent sends this."
He opened a saddlebag.
He lifted out a circlet of black glass, plain and heavy, with a crack running across it.
The Night Crown.
Beside it lay a leather wrap with the broken halves of the oath blade, and between them a pale ember the size of a plum, still glowing.
