Chapter 18: Soundcheck
The lanyard around my neck said Wardrobe, and the photo on it was of someone else's cousin.
I wore a black hoodie, black jeans and a roll of gaffer tape on my wrist, and I walked through the loading dock at the arena at three o'clock on Thursday with my head down.
A security guard glanced at the pass and waved me on.
The arena was enormous and half dark, with rigging overhead and a thousand empty seats.
Dax stood on the center stage under a single white light, with a silver microphone in his hand.
Gil sat at a folding table at the foot of the stage with a laptop and a clipboard.
Calla stood in the wings with her arms crossed, in the same gray hoodie.
I found a seat in the fourth row of the dark and sat down.
"From the top of 'Stay Till Morning,'" a voice called from the house speakers. "Dax, whenever you're ready."
The engineer wasn't in sight.
He was somewhere stage left with his hand on a fader, and I had told myself not to look for him.
The band track started.
It was the record, with its drums, its bass and my chords.
Dax lifted the microphone and opened his mouth.
For three bars the voice came out of the speakers as it always did, in a warm roar that filled the room.
Then it vanished.
The band kept playing.
Dax kept going.
His lips shaped the opening line, and nothing came.
He frowned and tapped the microphone against his palm.
His mic was live, and in the silence the whole arena heard what he sounded like.
