Chapter 18: The Garage

I set the spatula down very carefully.

Lulu had stopped building her tower.

"Why are police here?" she said.

Nobody answered her fast enough.

The doorbell rang, and the security chief let them into the foyer.

Two officers in uniform, a man and a woman, with rain on their shoulders and their hands nowhere near anything.

"Holly Thornquist?" the woman said.

"That's me."

"We'd like you to come down to the precinct and answer some questions about an incident yesterday afternoon."

"Am I under arrest?"

"Not at this time."

Lulu had climbed off her chair. She came and stood against my leg in her pajamas and stared up at the officers.

"Is Holly in trouble?"

The woman officer's face softened. "We just need to talk to her, sweetheart."

"She doesn't hit," Lulu informed her. "She's not allowed. It's a rule in our house."

"Lulu," Nate said.

"It's a rule, Daddy. You made it."

I crouched down in front of her.

My heart was banging, but my hands were steady on her shoulders.

"Somebody told a fib about me," I said. "These officers have to check it. That's their job, like checking your homework."
