Chapter 19: Last Cup

The Bellmoor dining hall at eight in the morning held about three hundred students, a waffle iron and my mother.

She sat alone at our usual table by the window, in her good cardigan, with the steel thermos upright in front of her and two paper cups set out beside it.

Dani stood twenty feet away with her tray, white to the lips.

"She won't leave," she whispered when I reached her. "She asked for you at the register. Twice."

"Where's Rhys?"

"Right behind you, pretending to read the bulletin board."

I looked.

He stood by the cork board in his coat, very tall, doing a poor impression of a man with nowhere to be.

I put my shoulders back and walked to the table.

"Sierra." Mom stood up. Her eyes were red and swollen, and her voice shook. "Oh, honey. Sit with me. Please."

"No."

"Just for a minute."

"I can hear you from here."

People at the next tables had stopped eating.

A girl in a sorority sweatshirt put down her phone, and then picked it up again, and held it at chest height.

Mom poured a cup, her hand trembling, and set it on my side of the table.

"You're making a terrible mistake," she said, softly, with her whole face wet. "That man has you confused. He's turned you against your own family. Drink one cup, sweetheart. Just one, and come home with me, and I'll tell the Alpha you were ill. He'll forgive it. He told me he would."

"He told you."

"He's willing to forgive all of it, if you come now."

The steam rose from the cup.

It smelled of lavender and something under the lavender, and I knew it better than any smell in my life.
