Chapter 15: The Landing
Cade didn't ask me anything on the drive.
He had seen my face when I came down the stairs, and he kept both hands on the wheel the whole way to Millvale.
In the shop he locked the roll-up door, and I climbed the steel ladder ahead of him.
The lamp in the loft was still on from the night before.
I sat on the edge of the bed with my brace in my lap, and the words came out before I could stop them.
"I thought the worst part was Candice on the couch."
He stood at the top of the ladder and listened.
"It wasn't," I said. "I fell down a flight of stairs and lay on the landing with my cheek on the floor, and he stood above me, and then he went and got a drink."
My voice didn't shake.
That was what frightened me.
"Four years," I said. "I made that man soup when he had the flu. And I wasn't worth walking down one flight of stairs for."
Cade crossed the floor in three strides and knelt in front of me.
The boards creaked under his knees.
