Chapter 16: The Ring
I came down the ladder in Cade's flannel with my hair a wreck and my brace on.
I looked at the man in the doorway the way you look at a stranger who has your name.
"Trevor?" I said. "It's early."
He stood in the gap of the roll-up door with a paper bag in one hand.
His eyes went from my bare legs to the flannel to Cade at the top of the ladder with no shirt.
Something moved in his face that was not a smile.
"Wow," he said. "You two are close."
"I couldn't sleep at Jo's," I said. "Cade let me watch him build a stair."
"At six in the morning."
"It was very restful."
Cade came down behind me and stood at my shoulder.
Trevor took a breath and put the smile back on.
"Here's my offer," he said. "Friday is our last tasting before the investors come on Monday. Sixty guests. I want you there, Lainey, as my guest of honor. And I want you there, Cade, because you built the bar, and I owe you."
