Chapter 17: The Test
He sent the invitation at seven the next morning, in a text that looked like peace.
"Lunch at my place. Just the three of us, no audience. I want to make this right. T."
"He's lying," Cade said, reading it over my shoulder.
"He is."
"So we don't go."
"We go." I tucked the phone away. "He said he'd prove it, and I want to see what he thinks proves it."
Cade's jaw worked.
"Then I'm coming up the stairs with you."
"You're coming up the stairs with me."
We stood on the sidewalk outside Trevor's building at noon.
I looked at the three flights.
Cade's hand found the small of my back, and he did not push.
I climbed.
The first landing was nothing.
The second landing had a dent in the plaster at shoulder height.
My feet slowed on their own.
I made myself breathe, in and out, the way I did with frightened animals on the table.
A dog on a table is not allowed to know that you are afraid.
