Chapter 10: The Dress

The bridal shop on Taylor Street smelled like steam and tulle.

A seamstress with pins in her mouth walked around me in a slow circle.

I stood on a round pedestal in front of three mirrors.

I wore a white silk dress I had never seen until that morning.

It was plain and long, with a low back, a fitted bodice and sleeves of French lace to the wrist.

It fit me.

"It was," the seamstress said, around the pins.

"Mr. Lucchesi sent your measurements the morning after he proposed."

"He did what?"

"He said you wouldn't want a fuss, so I should keep it plain," she said.

I laughed, and then I looked at myself and stopped.

My hair was loose down my back and my shoulders showed through the lace.

For the first time in my life I looked like someone who was loved on purpose.

The bell on the shop door rang.

"Oh, here she is."

Serafina came in with a garment bag over one arm.

She wore a cream coat and cream heels, and two women from the Orsini family followed her.

She had plainly come to be seen.

She stopped when she saw the dress, and her face went still.

It was only a half second.

Then she smiled, wide and false, and the whole shop turned to look.

"Look at this," she said to the other women. "Someone's playing bride. Isn't it sweet?"

"Serafina," I said.

"A dress like that takes a special order, sweetie. Do they even make white silk in your-"
