Chapter 13: Box Four, Again
A week after the masquerade, the Meridian Theatre was a cave of dust sheets and stacked chairs.
Noreen let us in at the stage door with a key from her jacket.
Donovan carried three work lamps and set one down every ten feet.
"You've lit the whole backstage," I said.
"I like to see the exits."
"It's an opera house. It has forty exits and a ghost light."
The ghost light stood at center stage, one bare bulb on a pole.
He walked past it.
Box 4 smelled of dust and cedar.
The curtain I had fallen through hung open, and the red velvet chairs sat in their gilt row facing the empty hall.
"Third from the rail," I said.
Donovan stood over the chair and did not move.
"Eleven years I've sat here," he said. "I've put my boots on this floor."
"Then it's about time somebody lifted the board."
Noreen came up the box stairs with a crowbar.
"You carry a crowbar?" I asked.
"I carry a crowbar, a thermos, and a spare phone. Move the chair."
Donovan moved the chair.
