Chapter 7: Rule Three

At two in the morning I opened the door, and Rowan was still sitting on the floor.

He had taken off his jacket and loosened his tie.

He looked up at me with his head against the wall.

"You're supposed to be asleep," he said.

"You're supposed to be in your bed."

"It's too far."

I sat down on the floor across from him, in my dress, with my bare knees up.

"I didn't mean it the way you heard it," I said.

"You don't have to explain."

"I do. When I asked about Preston's face, it wasn't about him."

He waited.

"It was the first time in seven years anyone stood next to me in front of people," I said. "I wanted you to have seen it too."

His jaw moved once.

"That's all?" he said.

"I wanted you to enjoy it with me."

He was quiet for so long I thought I had ruined it again.

Then he said, "I did enjoy it."

"Then you broke rule three first," I said. "You said what you'd do to me with your mouth."

"I said where. I didn't say when."

"Rowan."

"Yes."

"Ask me if I want to break it."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

He stood up, and held out his hand, and I took it.

He didn't pull me against him.

He walked me backward into his bedroom, and shut the door with his foot, and stopped at the foot of the bed.

I reached behind my own neck and found the zipper he had closed.

"Let me," he said.

"You don't get to be slow."
