Chapter 14: The Third Night

I did not touch his hand, because I did not know what it would do.

I stepped in front of him, between his face and the car, and I made him look at me.

"Not the car," I said. "Me."

His eyes were black all the way across.

"Please," I said, which is not an order, and he knew the difference even then.

His fingers opened.

The bent bar stayed bent.

Behind the glass, Manigault smiled and lifted two fingers from his cane, and the sedan drew away from the curb.

"Take him home," the Archivist said from her doorstep. "Before he breaks something that does not bend."

We slept through the day in the cellar room of the Legare Street house, behind a locked door.

He woke at dusk and did not speak.

I found him in the front hall at seven with his coat on, standing at the foot of the staircase.

The newel post lay in two pieces on the floor.

"Where are you going?" I said.

"The Marlow."

"Why?"

"Because she is in that building, and so is he."

He said it in the flat voice of a man reading a list.

"I stood on the lawn that night," he said. "She was beside the coal hatch with soot on her face."

"I know."

"I put my coat around her shoulders."

I stopped moving.

"She let me," he said. "She said thank you. Then she watched me go back into the house for your foster parents."
