The hostages walked out one at a time, because Manigault liked to keep his word when it cost him nothing.
The nurse came first, then the cab drivers, then the boy, who ran straight into his grandfather's coat.
The guard holding Winnie let go last, and she took one step and swung her handbag into his stomach on principle.
I was already across the cellar and over the fence.
The sedan sat at the curb with its back door open.
Emeric stood beside it in silver cuffs, with a guard's hand on each arm.
He was looking at the sky.
"Look at me," I said.
He did.
"You didn't ask me."
"No."
"I was the one saying it. It was my mouth and my blood and my sentence, and you let the minute go."
"There were six people with knives at their throats, Clem."
"You could have said yes, and I could have finished, and he would have had nothing left to threaten you with."
"He would have killed the boy first," Emeric said quietly. "He is a man who likes to prove a point."
