Chapter 14: The Daughter

"Sit down," Alden said to her.

"No," she said.

Her voice shook, but she did not look away from him.

She turned to the hall instead.

"Four weeks ago my father told me the Alpha would walk out before his birthday," she said. "He knew it, because he had pushed him."

"He told me I'd be the Luna of a pack with a regent, and the regent would be him."

"I was raised on that. I believed it."

She turned to me.

"When I challenged you in this room, he told me to take your face," she said.

"Not to scare you. To take it, so the Alpha would never look at you the same way."

"I went for your throat instead of your face because I was a coward, and you stood there anyway."

"I have been sick about it since that night."

Nobody in the hall breathed.

I could hear the chain tick against my arm.

"I'm sorry," she said to me. "I don't expect anything for it."

"Daughter," Alden said again, very quietly. "That is enough."

"It is not."

She tore open the envelope and held up a stack of papers.

"This is a regency order, signed by my father and dated three weeks ago."
