Chapter 22: Three Rivers
The Point is where the Allegheny and the Monongahela run together and become the Ohio.
At dusk the fountain throws up its white plume, and the lawn around it empties as the tourists go home.
By the time we got there, three hundred people were standing on the grass in the dark.
They stood in family groups and did not talk.
I had walked past that fountain a thousand times and never once thought of it as a place wolves came to.
"They're afraid you won't like it," Mathias said, low, as we walked down the path.
"Like what?"
"Whatever it is."
The woman in the gray sweater was waiting at the front.
I knew her at once, though I had never learned her name.
She had stood at the edge of the silver circle in the lodge and asked whether a human woman could hold a litter.
She came forward with her hands clasped hard in front of her.
"Luna," she said. It sounded strange to hear. "I asked you something in the lodge."
"You asked whether I could hold a litter," I said. "Human women die in the bearing."
