Chapter 18: The Stone Hall
The Stone Hall stood on a bare shelf of rock in the Northern Passes, with nothing around it but wind.
It was one round room, roofed with black slate, and inside it seven carved chairs stood in a ring on a floor of pale stone.
Seven Alphas sat in them.
Behind each chair stood a dozen of that pack's wolves, in their colors.
I came in through the great door with Conrad on one side and the old woman of Blackmere on the other.
Nan and Tobin waited outside with two Blackmere guards, as I had asked.
I wore my own plain dark coat, my mother's key at my neck, and the tin box and the ledger in a canvas bag on my shoulder.
Nobody in that hall looked at me kindly.
My father sat in the chair of Greywater, the one with the grey sash hung across its back.
He was in a good black suit, with his iron hair brushed back.
Beside his chair stood Daphne, in white.
Her bandaged hand was held across her chest where everyone could see it.
Her face was a perfect pale mask.
She did not look at me.
Two of my father's enforcers stood so close behind her that their sleeves touched her dress.
The keeper of the Gathering, a gaunt man with a staff, struck the floor three times.
"The seven are sat. The charge is laid. Let Alpha Hartwell of Greywater speak."
My father rose.
He lifted both arms to the room, and his voice rang off the slate.
"Alphas. I stand here with a heavy heart. A daughter of my house has stolen from me, and from the dead."
A murmur went around the ring.
"Linnea Hartwell, my eldest, took her late mother's keepsake and broke into a locked room in my home. She took private papers that were not hers to take. When I forbade her, she ran, and she led a good and loyal Alpha into her schemes." He turned, and his eyes were wet. "I cast her out. It broke my heart. I did it so that she would learn what she had done."
