Chapter 20: Blind

"I would like to practice," Kagiro said.

He said it in the kitchen that evening, with the door shut and the steward standing very still beside the range.

Riko put down the towel in her hands.

"Now?"

"Now. Before it is too late to learn."

"You heard what I told him," she said.

"I heard you say I am not hollow."

"You aren't."

"No one has ever said so before a room."

He stood bracing for a blow, and she understood that he had decided to fight.

"Daigo," she said. "Get a blindfold."

The tanuki brought a strip of black cloth and tied it around his lord's eyes with trembling paws.

"Cover the dishes," said Riko. "Don't tell either of us what's under."

Daigo went to the pantry with great ceremony and came back with three bowls, each under a lid.

He set the first one on the pass.

Riko wiped her hands and lifted the lid herself.

Steam rose, and a smell of kelp and soy.

She dipped one fingertip into the broth and held it out.

Kagiro found her wrist by touch and drew her finger to his mouth.

"Kelp," he said. "Dried fish, shaved thin. A little sweetness. Salt."

"Is he right?" she asked Daigo.

"Kelp and bonito," Daigo said, reading the label. "He is right!"
