Chapter 16: Welcome Home
On Saturday at ten the waterfront park was full to the seawall.
Bunting hung from the lamps, a brass band sat under a tent, and a stage faced the river with a podium and a row of folding chairs.
Forty Marines from my unit stood in dress blues in four lines on the grass.
I stood in the second line with Boone at my shoulder.
Myra was somewhere in the crowd with fourteen yard workers around her, all of them in clean shirts.
My mother sat on the stage in the center chair.
She wore a navy suit and her pearls, and a wreath of white roses sat on an easel beside her.
Four women from the Marine families sat in the other chairs, and none of them looked at her.
She had told the program committee she would escort me up the steps.
I had told them nothing, and I had not walked to the stage.
A retired colonel with a voice ran the ceremony.
He welcomed the unit home.
He thanked the town.
Then he said, "To open our program, the chair of the Marine Mothers' Wreath, Mrs. Diane Tarrant."
