Chapter 18: Staying

I called the one deputy who still picked up my calls.

He came down the dock in ten minutes, looked at my brother lying in a puddle, and sighed through his whole body.

"Come on, Dixon," he said. "I'll drive you to a couch."

Dixon went with him without a word.

At the head of the dock he turned once and looked back at the boat, as if he meant to say something.

Then he didn't.

The taillights went out through the gate.

Myra was sitting on the step of the wheelhouse with a blanket around her shoulders.

She had watched all of it from the hatch.

I sat down beside her, and for a while neither of us talked.

"You pulled him out," she said finally.

"He would have drowned."

"I know. I'm not mad you did it."

"Then what's wrong?"

She picked at the chipped edge of the step.

"I need to say something stupid," she said. "Don't make a face."

"I'm not making a face."

"You're making the one where your jaw does the thing."

I unclenched my jaw.

"Your father wrote that you stay," she said. "He told me to follow the one who stays. But he was talking about a yard."

"He wasn't promising I'd get you."

"Myra."

"You're a Marine. You get orders, and orders change."
