Chapter 11: Church Magnet

On Monday morning I burned the biscuits, and I knew exactly why.

I had lain awake half the night after the fruit stand, warm and wrecked and happy.

One thought had turned over under all of it.

Jesse came in from the lane at seven with the coffee thermos.

He found me standing at the stove, staring at a black tray.

"Smells burnt," he said, mild.

"I made them wrong," I said.

"They're just biscuits."

"I'm not talking about the biscuits," I said.

He set the thermos down.

I turned around with the oven mitt still on my hand.

"I went to your father's table three Sundays this fall," I said. "Waylon took me."

"I know."

"I sat in that chair and passed the rolls. The second Sunday, your father called me 'the help' while he said grace."

Jesse did not move.

"You were there," I said. "You sat right across from me and cut your meat. You heard every word of it."

"Susie," he said.

"You never said a thing. Not that Sunday, not the next, not on Friday when I stood on a trailer with a pan of cobbler."

"I know," he said.

"Don't you say 'I know' to me."

"What do you want me to say?" he asked.

"You watched him do it to me all summer, and you let your brother stand there and laugh. I want you to tell me why."

He took off his cap and rubbed a hand over his hair.
