The church kitchen smelled of burnt coffee and floor wax.

My mother sat at the long steel table in her green cardigan, with a pencil behind her ear and no makeup on.

Ronan stood by the door.

Colm sat on a stool with his knees together and his phone face down.

"Here's the run sheet," Mom said.

She slid it across the table.

It was a printout, forty pages, stapled in the corner, with Eugene's handwriting in the margins.

"Minute thirty-eight is the vote," she said. "He asks the audience for a show of hands on a motion to reconcile. At minute forty, security walks you off if you aren't crying."

"I'll be in the front row," I said. "I told Dad so."

"He believes you. He thinks you're coming to give in."

"Where's the screen?"

"Behind the stage, a big LED wall. The booth controls it." She tapped the page. "Eugene's tech runs the booth. He's loyal to the paycheck."

"I can work with a paycheck," Ronan said.

"Can you?"

"I can talk to him. I've done his lights for three years."

My mother looked at me.

"I'm asking something," she said. "I know I don't have the right."

"Ask."

"I want to hold up my hand when you ask for the money. On the stage. I want to be the first."

I stared at her.

"You'll be on his side of the table," I said. "He'll see it."
