Chapter 16: The Mark
The Moon Stone was colder than I had expected.
It was a flat slab of granite the size of a double bed, gone violet in the last of the light.
I stood on it in my boots and my flannel shirt, the first rogue-born wolf in three hundred years to do it.
Nothing happened.
No thunder, no hand on my shoulder.
Just the wind in the cedars and the river somewhere below.
Jarrett came out of the trees at dusk with his hands empty.
He stopped at the edge of the clearing and looked at me standing where I wasn't allowed.
"You're on the Stone," he said.
"I am."
"The law."
"Is about a vow," I said. "I'm not here for a vow."
He stepped up onto the granite.
In the half-light his grey eyes had gone almost silver.
"Then what is this?"
"A mark," I said. "You've worn my scent for five years and never worn my teeth."
His breath caught.
"You make a wolf earn that," he said.
"I know I do."
"Then tell me how."
"Take off your coat."
He did.
"Your shirt."
He pulled it over his head and dropped it on the stone, and the cold went over his bare chest.
The scar was pale and clean along his ribs.
