I read the letter, standing in the records room with five installers watching.

The words were polite and medical.

Extremely low sperm count. Natural conception very unlikely. We recommend repeat testing in three months and an early referral for assisted options.

At the bottom, the doctor had signed his name, and below that a line in smaller print.

Results sent to the patient only, at the patient's request.

I turned over the page.

Behind it was a second sheet, a consent form, and I couldn't make my eyes read it yet.

"Give me that," Graeme said.

He crossed the floor in three steps and held out his hand.

I stepped back, and the folder stayed against my chest.

"No."

"It's a private medical file, Phoebe."

"It's six years old," I said. "It has the month on it. It's the month before my first appointment at that clinic."

"It says unlikely." His voice cracked on it. "It doesn't say never. Read it again. It says very unlikely, and I was right to wait, because look. Look at what happened. Bethany is pregnant."

The installer with the phone had stopped recording.

Nobody in the room was looking at anything except Graeme.

"You knew," I said.

"I knew there was a risk."

"For six years."

"I was going to get tested again."

"Did you?"

He didn't answer.
