Chapter 8: Bolt Cutters

On Thursday morning I walked into the warehouse at seven-fifteen, an hour before Graeme usually arrived.

Abel was waiting on the loading dock with five of his installers.

They were big men in canvas jackets, and they were holding their coffee cups very still.

"I didn't ask for backup," I said.

"I didn't ask them either," Abel said. "They saw the videos."

One of the older ones lifted his cup a half inch.

"Ma'am," he said. "Your tax software saved my mortgage in 2021. We'd like to see this."

I almost cried, which would not have helped.

The records room was at the back of the warehouse, behind the shipping desk.

A man I had never seen before stood in front of its door in a black polo that said SECURITY across the chest.

He had a clipboard and a nervous look.

"Nobody goes in," he said. "By order of the owner."

"I'm the owner," Abel said. "Forty percent. Sixty percent doesn't outvote me on access to the company's books. The state says so."

"I was told Mr. Colter."

"Mr. Colter hired you on a Tuesday. I've worked in this building for twelve years."

The guard looked at the seven of us.

He looked at the clipboard again.

Behind him, a door slammed, and Graeme came striding through the shipping area in his overcoat with his phone in his hand.

He had clearly been warned.

"What is this?" he said. "Abel, step away from that door."

"Good morning," Abel said.

"Phoebe." Graeme gave me the sad look, the patient one. "You can't just walk in here. You're a part of this family, but you're not on the payroll as of this week."
